Reviewing two new books on the conflict between evolution and religion, biologist Jerry Coyne writes in The New Republic: "If we cannot prove that humanoid evolution was inevitable, then the reconciliation of evolution and Christianity collapses. For if we really were the special object of God's creation, our evolution could not have been left to chance."
It seems pretty egotistical for religious anti-evolutionists to insist that mankind is "the special object of God's creation." To borrow Paul Zahl's phrase (probably not to his pleasure), it betrays a high anthropology, an exalted opinion of humanity's place in the scheme of things.
