For the past few years, my house's outdoor "Christmas lights" have been purple, in recognition of the Advent season. (My wife calls it one of my pharisaic impulses.) Every year I resolve that on Christmas Eve I'll replace the purple lights with traditional multi-colored ones, but it never seems to happen.
My wife continues to plug in the purple lights, even though Advent is over. Yesterday I told her I'd thought of a theological rationalization for keeping the lights purple, one that matches my heretical christology:
Advent is the season of waiting for the arrival of the Messiah, right?
Well, nearly 2,000 Christmases have come and gone, and we're still waiting ....
